What to Do if You’ve Knocked Out a Tooth

  1. The first thing you need to do if you knock out a tooth is locate the tooth. When you find the tooth, carefully handle it, and only pick it up by the crown – do not touch the root. Gently rinse off any dirt that is on the tooth, and then store it in a sealed container which has been filled with milk or contact solution.
  2. Make sure you immediately apply pressure to your mouth with a clean cloth or tissue to control the bleeding.  The sooner you can get to our practice, the more likely it is that you will be able to save your tooth. We offer same-day dentistry to accommodate dental emergencies.

What To Do in a Dental Emergency?

  • Call your closest dental clinic. If it’s during business hours, speak to a dentist for guidance and to schedule an appointment.

  • If you have a bleeding injury, apply pressure to the area with a clean cloth or gauze.
  • If a tooth is knocked out, try to find it and hold it by the crown (not the root) and rinse it gently with water or store it in a container of milk.
  • If there is swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek or mouth to reduce swelling.
  • Over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or paracetamol can ease the pain.

FAQS

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency can include severe tooth pain, a broken or chipped tooth, a lost filling or crown, an abscessed tooth, or any other condition that requires immediate attention to alleviate pain or prevent further damage.

How do I know if I need emergency dental care?

If you are experiencing severe pain, bleeding from the mouth, swelling of the gums or face, or if you have suffered an injury to your teeth or jaw, contact your emergency dentist.

What should I do if I have a toothache?

First try rinsing your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food particles that might be causing the pain. You can apply a cold compress to the affected area for temporary relief. However, if the pain is severe, it is important to seek emergency care.

What should I do if I have lost a crown or filling?

Try to retrieve the crown or filling and bring it with you to your appointment. Apply clove oil to the area for temporary relief of sensitivity.

How should I handle a broken or chipped tooth?

Save any pieces of the tooth and rinse it gently with water. Apply gauze to control any bleeding and seek immediate dental attention.

What do I do with an abscessed tooth?

An abscessed tooth can be very painful and may require antibiotics and drainage by a dentist. Avoid touching the abscess as this could cause more harm; instead, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and seek emergency dental help as soon as possible.

Can I get emergency dental care after office hours?

At all our dental clinics, we reserve time throughout each day to accommodate emergency appointments. Please contact your closest dental clinic.
